WELCOME TO MY PORTFOLIO

ABOUT ME

My name is Sam Stokes, and I am 23 years old, currently pursuing my third semester in the Video Game Development program at Bow Valley College. I am dedicated to enhancing my skills in industry-standard software such as Unreal Engine, Unity, Blender, Houdini, Maya, 3D Max, and Substance Painter, with the ultimate goal of achieving my long-term aspiration of becoming a full-time game developer.

Level Design

During one of our classes last semester, we were given eight weeks to develop a game. Our project, DashFire, currently has a early access version available on Steam. This semester, our focus will be on refining the game, addressing any issues, and expanding content with new game modes, levels, and weapons. In this project, I served as the level designer, responsible for creating 2D sketches of the levels, implementing and grayboxing them within the engine, and conducting tests to ensure the levels offer engaging gameplay flow, variety, and, most importantly, a fun player experience.

School projects

Below are some of my most notable school projects, and I plan to update this section as I continue to progress through the program. Among the courses I've found most engaging are Level/Game Design, 3D Environment/Character Art, and Rapid Prototype Development.

Prototypes

Throughout my program thus far, in groups we've had to make games within Unreal Engine and Unity and publish them on itch.io. For most of the games we work in groups to get use to the feeling and environment of what it's like working as a team. I mainly take on the role as the level designer, here's some of the better games I've been apart of and worked on.

World Building

One of my favorite aspects of game development is designing and creating environments. Each row showcases a different project, all of which were developed using Unreal Engine and Unity. Please note that none of the assets were created by me.

Fortnite Creative

Using the Fortnite Unreal Editor, I have created and published my own map, titled Maze Escape Room. I am also currently working on several other maps, which are set for release in the near future. While these projects are independent of my school work, they provide me with an opportunity to explore my creativity and push the boundaries of my design skills.
